I know what the professor means though by following the rules, but thinking outside the box. The rules hes referring to are ones you dont want to break, even if youre trying to make something unique or different. Those are the rules that set us apart from the myriad of "designers" out there who dont know any better or who use word and publisher for all their stuff.
But really those rules are pretty flexible. Designing on command SUCKS, but if you design as a career, you have to do that every day.
Anyway, I feel your pain dude. Wait till you do it as a career... it gets worse.
What do you use to distress tiny parts of the image? Brushes?
